Stuck in your genealogical research?

It’s not uncommon to come up against a brick wall in genealogical research.

Perhaps you’re missing a key date or place, or can’t find the document you need to confirm a family link.

But are you sure you’ve explored every avenue?

You probably already have information that you haven’t thought of using. Before you give up, take a few minutes to try this method, which may help you find a new lead.

To find a document, you need at least a place and a date.
– Official documents such as birth, marriage and death certificates are kept in the archives of the département where the event took place. If you don’t know where this is, you should know that these events are also listed in the margins of the person’s civil status record in the individual’s place of birth. So it’s possible to find information in two places.
– Even an approximate date can help you narrow down the period and consult one or two decennial indexes, arranged alphabetically. In just a few minutes, you can find out if an event is listed for that period and, if so, find the corresponding deed in the archives.

To find a document, it is therefore essential to know the person’s place of birth.

Replace missing information with a working hypothesis

If you don’t know the date or location of the event, don’t be discouraged. You can always do your research and make assumptions.

For example, you can assume that a child’s place of birth is the same as that of his or her siblings, and that his or her date of birth is close to theirs (within one or three years), even if you don’t know his or her birth order within the siblings.

This simple assumption can open up a new avenue of research, even if you don’t know the date or place of birth!
