GEDCOM file management

Genealogical Data Analysis analyzes your genealogy data exported in GEDCOM format from your genealogy application.

Export your data in GEDCOM format

Genealogical Data Analysis does not read data directly into your genealogy software (or website). You must therefore start by exporting your data in GEDCOM format.

Remarque
The procedure for exporting data depends on the software you use. We cannot describe it here

Add a GEDCOM file to your list of files to be analyzed

You can add a single GEDCOM file or all the GEDCOM files in a directory.

Add a single GEDCOM file

To add a GEDCOM file to the list of monitored GEDCOM files, open the Genealogical Data Analysis main window and select :

  • either use the “Files” menu / “Add a GEDCOM file” option;
  • or use the button on the banner;
  • or right-click on the list and select the “Add GEDCOM file” option.

The GEDCOM file selection window appears:

Genealogical Data Analysis - Add a GEDCOM file
Genealogical Data Analysis – Add a GEDCOM file

To add a GEDCOM file :

  1. Browse for the file using the [Browse…] button
  2. Select the file and confirm with the [Add selected GEDCOM file] button
Tip
The end-of-line separator type is automatically identified: CR/LF for Windows and LF for Linux. However, you can force the application to use an end-of-line separator other than the one identified, if required

The file is added to the list.

Remarque
If the file is already in the list, you will be prompted to reload it or cancel the action. Depending on the options selected, Genealogical Data Analysis may also offer to analyze it immediately

Add all GEDCOM files from a directory

You can also add all the files present in a directory (and its subdirectories).

  1. Display the application options window and select the “GEDCOM files” tab.
  2. Select the option “Add GEDCOM files automatically when the application is launched”
  3. Select the directory to be read.
  4. Check the “Search also in subdirectories” option if required.
  5. Save these options.

The next time the application is launched, Genealogical Data Analysis will search for the files and add them automatically. Genealogical Data Analysis will not modify files already in the list of tracked files.

Attention
Using the subdirectory file search can add a lot of GEDCOM files. The number of files added to the list of tracked files may then exceed the usage limits of the Genealogical Data Analysis edition

Search for updated GEDCOM files

Genealogical Data Analysis can check whether GEDCOM files have been updated since their last analysis, and tell you which files need to be analyzed again.

Remark
To benefit from Genealogical Data Analysis’s ability to identify whether data has been modified, it is imperative that you export your data in a GEDCOM file with the same name

This verification can be done :

  • on request (manually),
  • or automatically, when the application is launched.

Manually check if GEDCOM files have been modified

To manually check whether GEDCOM files have been updated :

  1. Display the Genealogical Data Analysis main window.
  2. Use the banner button: .

Automatically check if GEDCOM files have been modified when launching the application

To enable this feature, you need to modify the options :

  1. Display the application options window and select the “GEDCOM files” tab.
  2. Select the “Automatically check if GEDCOM files have been modified when launching the application” option.
  3. Save these options.

Genealogical Data Analysis will perform the check the next time the application is launched.

Removing a GEDCOM file

You can remove a GEDCOM file from the list of tracked files.

Tip
Removing a GEDCOM file from the list of tracked files frees up a position for another GEDCOM file if you are using an edition limited in the number of tracked GEDCOM files.

To remove a GEDCOM file from the list of tracked GEDCOM files, you need to display the Genealogical Data Analysis main window, then :

  • either use the “Files” menu / “Remove a GEDCOM file” option;
  • or use the button on the banner;
  • or right-click on the list and select the “Remove a GEDCOM file” option.
Attention
The analyses made for this file will be deleted. The GEDCOM file is removed from the list but is not deleted from the computer

The GEDCOM removal window appears:

Genealogical Data Analysis - Removing a GEDCOM file
Genealogical Data Analysis – Removing a GEDCOM file

Confirm the action by clicking on the “Remove GEDCOM file and delete analyses” button

Wait for the message indicating that deletion is complete.

Advice
If you remove a lot of GEDCOM files, we recommend you use the database optimization tool afterwards
