How to use GedcomRenumber ?

This procedure explains how to use GEDCOM Renumber to renumber identifiers in your genealogy.

Principle

GEDCOM Renumber lets you modify files in GEDCOM format to renumber the identifiers of individuals, families, sources, repositories, media and notes , using a uniform format and maintaining the consistency of links between information.

Export your genealogical data in GEDCOM format from your genealogy application. The information is not modified directly in your application.
Process the GEDCOM file using this application.
Import the processed file into your genealogy application after saving your data.

Export data in GEDCOM format

The procedure for exporting data depends on the software you are using. We cannot describe it here.

Processing data

The information that will be modified is that which has been exported. The data is not modified directly in your genealogy application.

You need to export all the people, families, sources, repositories and sources that will be affected by this renumbering. As you will then need to re-import this data into a new “folder” in your application, you should not partially export the data unless you are sure that this is your objective.

Use the buttons to choose your language: English, French or German.

Remarque
If you change the language, the software will be restarted

Choosing the file to process

Search for the GEDCOM file to be processed using the [File…] button.

Once the file has been selected, GEDCOM Renumber indicates the name of the file to be created. You can modify this name.

Remarque
By default, the renumbered file is created in the same location as the original file

Choice of renumbering options

GEDCOM Renumber lets you choose which identifiers you want to renumber and how you want to renumber the identifiers.

Tip
You can use or modify the suggested options. You can also save these values with the [Save these values] button and reuse them with the [Restore values] button

Selection of TAGS to be processed

The GEDCOM standard defines several types of information, identified by tags (TAGS):

  • IND for individuals.
  • FAM for families.
  • SRC for sources.
  • REP for repositories.
  • MED for media.
  • NOTE for notes.
  • SUB for depositors.

You can renumber all types of information, or just some of them. Select the TAGs to be processed or not by checking or unchecking the corresponding boxes.

Remark
If an information type is not renumbered, the identifiers for this information type will not be modified. This does not create inconsistencies or destroy links between information

Prefix

Indicate the prefix to be used for each type of information. The prefix is a text placed before the number (for example IND0001).

Attention
The prefix must be chosen according to your application

Number length

GEDCOM Renumber - Choice of number of digits
GEDCOM Renumber – Choice of number of digits

You can choose the number of digits to be used for the numbers. Numbers start with “0”, for example “IND0001”.

Tip
The length of the number allows you to have identifiers that correspond to your needs: for example 3 for less than 999 individuals, 4 for less than 9999 individuals…

First number to use

GEDCOM Renumber – Choice of start number

You can specify the number from which you wish to start numbering.

Tip
This allows you, for example, to import several GEDCOM files into your application without the risk of conflicting identities:

  • file 1: IND from 1 (it contains 500 people, for example)
  • file 2: IND from 600

Import data into your application
