Research wizard

Genealogical Data Analysis helps you advance your research by identifying missing sources of information and organizing their retrieval.

Genealogical Data Analysis’s research wizard is a powerful tool capable of quickly building an optimized list of searches to be carried out, taking into account your preferred method

To guarantee the completeness and traceability of your information, Genealogical Data Analysis :

  • checks that the information is correct (e.g. date of birth);
  • checks that the information is sourced, i.e. that the document from which the information was transcribed is indicated in the sources.

The Research Wizard then draws up a list of searches to be carried out, using the method of your choice.

Genealogical Data Analysis - Search wizard window - Suggested action(s)
Genealogical Data Analysis – Search wizard window – Suggested action(s)

Proposed actions are defined according to the information to be searched and the information already known. Each action is proposed in the following form:

  • Finding: this is the reason why the wizard proposes an action. For example: “The birth of an individual is not sourced”.
  • Suggested action: this is the action to be taken. For example, “Search for information on the individual’s place of birth”.
  • Evidence: this is a reminder of what is known. For example, the name, date and place of birth of the individual for whom information is to be sought.
  • Suggested action(s): These are detailed instructions with as much detail as possible about the action to be carried out.

The number of proposed actions depends on the information to be sought and the information already known. If no action can be proposed, the assistant will tell you why. In general, the reason is the absence of known information.

Remarque
Actions are proposed according to the options chosen. You can modify these options and recalculate the search

Create a search

You can create a search for each analysis performed on the GEDCOM file.

Select root person

The Research Wizard can take into account a “root” person from whom to organize searches. You can select another person by choosing them from the list and using the [Select] button. The list is displayed starting from this person, without recalculating the search.

Select the method to be used

You can choose the search method to be used:

  • Follow a progressive method (by ascendants): by selecting this method, Genealogical Data Analysis searches for the ascendants of the root person (see below) and displays them in the order of the ascendants of this root person (browsing the paternal branch then the maternal branch).
  • Follow a progressive method (by descendants): by selecting this method, Genealogical Data Analysis searches for the root person’s descendants (see below) and displays them in the order of that root person’s descent.
Remarque
If you don’t choose a method, the individuals and information will be displayed in the order of the analysis (i.e. of the GEDCOM file)

Calculate search

Confirm your choices with the [Calculate search] button.

The wizard performs the calculation based on the results obtained during the analysis and applying the selected options. The list of information is then displayed according to the search method selected and the filters chosen.

Remarque
If any information has been excluded from the GEDCOM file analysis, the search wizard will not be able to use it. For example, if you haven’t analyzed marriages, the search wizard won’t be able to suggest any actions concerning marriages

Using a search

To use an existing search :

  1. Select a search from the list of searches.
  2. Confirm with the “Use this search” button
